About CrossRef. In 1994, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) asserted that a unique identifier is necessary for the electronic publishing which could protect the author rights in the World Wide Web and could facilitate to manage the electronic content. This marked the first step to the creation of DOI® system. At the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1999, the Association of American Publishers in cooperation with International DOI Foundation and Corporation for National Research Initiatives demonstrated the DOI-X project, the prototype of a lookup system. Recognizing the importance and possibilities of this system for the electronic publishing, a group of leading academic publishers joined together as the non-profit organization and established CrossRef (http://www.crossref.org). Joining 12 members for start, CrossRef signed its 1000th cooperation agreement on 15 December 2010 and it now has 3273 participating academic publishers and associations (see the list of participants).
CrossRef's general purpose is to promote the development and cooperative use of new and innovative technologies, based on DOI® system, to speed, facilitate scholarly research and protect author rights.

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI®) System is for identifying content objects in the digital environment. DOI® names are assigned to any entity for use on digital networks. They are used to provide current information, including where they (or information about them) can be found on the Internet. While registering DOI for their publications, publishers taking part in this project have to make sure that their metadata contain correct URL addresses. Moreover, members that signed cooperation agreement in this project are obliged to connect the publications of other CrossRef members which are cited in their publications by using active referencing. Following such references, the reader can move from one publication to another without wasting time on extra search. Many publishers are not limited to compulsory requirements and aim at cross-referencing not only articles, books and conference proceedings, but also tables, figures, etc. with original cited publications. CrossRef technologies ensure that these references work properly. CrossRef administers the system of active referencing for 44m sources of different content, such as: research journals, conference proceedings, articles, books, book chapters, guidelines, etc.
Among CrossRef services are many initiatives related to search possibilities, metadata and citations (Cited-by-Linking).
CrossRef offers for the publisher the up-to-date technological solutions and support when implementing electronic publishing. More about CrossRef: http://www.crossref.org/CrossRefAnimation.html
